Work Session - 1/14/09

Bill Deptowicz made the air tank holders that will be mounted in the engineer/rider car for the yellow/gray engine. Ken Brooks and Frank Foti look over the engine to see what needs to be removed in order to seperate the boiler from the smokebox.
Frank using a piece of pipe to increase pipe wrench leverage as Ken holds the adjacent pipe fitting from moving. Frank's dad, Sam agreed with me that we needed to heat the boiler shell and had a set of oxygen/acetylene tanks and torch brought over to us.
Dick Clark worked with Joe Banzer on the GP38 rear truck to check out why the axle came out of the journal box after a derailing. Dave Foster manning the torch to heat the boiler joint at the smokebox as Dick and Joe work in the background.
The insulation on the boiler was removed at the end of our last work session and Dave continues to apply heat. Ken and Frank get ready to hammer on the end of the boiler tube to break the joint.
Joe and Dick working to remove the journal box after having removed the dummy brake rigging on this engine. While all this was going on Ted Nyland was continuing the work on making a No. 7 right hand switch.
Ken and Frank hammering on the boiler tube joint at the smokebox and no the boiler isn't under steam. Finally we got the joint apart and have the boiler pulled back about 3/4" from the smokebox.
A view inside the smokebox shows that it got hot enough to burn the carbon soot and turn it white. Joe trying his best to hold a screw driver for a screw on the other side of the truck.
A close-up view of the joint between the boiler and smokebox that now exists. The truck with the journal box removed with the axle skewed and Dick will examine the bearings and journal box.
