Work Session - 8/09/17

Ted Nyland with Dick Scott helping, unload Ted's interurbans from his van to the transfer table lift. In the switch building shed, Dennis Crislip and Ted start working on another switch for Dick Clark's bypass we are going to start building.
Dennis is setting the wedges to hold the straight rail that runs thru the switch which is the starting point. Over at the Old Car Barn, Frank Foti opened up the shed and is getting the work train out for hauling the tools to the new work site.
Ken Vendlinger had cut the grass around Shriver Station and was now heading to the parking area the work crew uses, to cut the grass around there. Dick Clark and Frank ponder the work ahead as they take a moment before loading the tools on the train.
We are going to remove some rail to install a switch near Pandora to eventually expedite running without having to run your train back into the station once you pass through Horrendous. Frank and John Koontz remove the rail joiner screws.
John, the man of steel, or at least his knees as he kneeles on the rail to work on the track panel. With the existing track panel removed the ballast was lowered enough for the new switch panel.
The existing rail had to be cut and filler pieces added to complete the continuity of the track thru the switch. One more piece of rail has to be cut to length and installed before we can reballast the area.
The area was too small for us to use the ballast car so the stone was handled by the bucketful. The switch buried in ballast needs a sweeping and checked for being level.
Frank manning the broom to sweep the switch panel down to the top of the ties. The last step was to put a screw into the tie at the switch point so it can't be thrown to divert a train onto the ground.
