Work Session - 9/27/17

Dick Clark watches as John Koontz keeps the train load of ballast from moving as the crew start to shovel the ballast on the track. We didn't want to chance bending the track with the ballast car so Bob Pakeltis spreads it between the rails with a shovel.
Frank Foti and Dick at Festival Bridge as they watch the progress in applying the ballast on the track. Bob and Ken Brooks take a short breather from shoveling the ballast.
Franks long passenger cars were sometimes climbing the rail on the curve into Short an found that the rail had a slight dip to it so the guys raised the outside rail. After leveling and ballasting, his cars were run through the curvature.
John Koontz operated the front end loader and loaded the ballast car as Ron Trenhaile and Ken watched. Dick Scott stands alongside of the ballast car as John prepares to rotate the bucket of ballast.
As things would have it, a stone on the rail derails the loaded ballast car, time for a pry bar. The little engine isn't trusted to haul the loaded ballast car, that job is left to the GP38 and Frank is running it.
With shoveled ballast supporting the rail now the ballast car is backed onto the new rail. With ballast in place it just needs to be leveled and tamped then a final sweeping.
It was decided to ballast the track at the crossing for the existing track until the new rail crossing can be made. Ken sweeps the rail as Dick shovels ballast to support the track for the ballast car.
With the gap filled in at the location of the existing rail, Dick and Ken dress off the ballast on the track. Ken sweeps off the excess ballast between the rails and I bet Dick Clark is eager to try it out with his train.
