Work Session - 5/23/18

More trees had been cut down behind the station but this time I didn't find any damaged track. Two large trees were removed just coming off the Festival Bridge and the switch into the bypass track behind the station.
With all the rain we've had conditions were just right for toadstools to grow as this one on an existing old tree stump. Today we are going to level the track going around the tree by the Willis Car Barn that has been raised by the tree roots.
After removing the rail clips, we removed several sections of track panels then started scraping out the existing ballast to expose the root. Bob Pakeltis started chopping with an ax at the offending root.
Bob took a breather while John Koontz started chopping with a madic as Frank Foti removes some more existing ballast. With the offending root trimmed and the rest of the ballast removed, track panels were layed back in place and re- connected.
Near the tree Dick Scott pushes the ballast back onto the track as Bob watches. The crew is leveling the track, tamping it and reballasting the track panels.
Another project completed that was in need of our attention and it looks good right now. Took this picture because of the sunlight coming through the trees and the symmetry of the track.
