5.14.08 Work Session

The Park removed the two trees that were damaged by the woodpeckers near the station. The Track Master(Dick Clark)wasn't here yet so Frank Foti and I began digging and clearing right-a-way for the bypass at Gruffer.
We are making good progress because it has rained for the last two days and the soil is soft if not muddy. It's surprising how far away from trees that you encounter roots that impede progress.
Yesterday a few of the members went over to George Davidsons and removed his track from the property. The rail was removed from the ties and each were stacked up near our storage sheds.
Some of the ties were already decaying so they were put on a separate pile. Lew Fowler, Mark Ross and Edith Hacker were trying to dig out the stumps and I suggested the Park system must have a stump grinder.
This view is from Summit where the new track we are clearing for will tie into the switch I'm standing by. The rough grade looks good and now we have to remove the ballast along the adjacent crossing.
Lew and Joe Banzer take a breather after we had placed the ties and Dick Clark had bent some aluminum rail for us. Frank is waiting as Dick is going to measure the rail to be cut and it's starting to rain.
It's raining harder as you can see the white spots caused by the cameras flash and Frank is wet. Time to head back up to the station for a few minutes to see if the rain is going to let up.
Frank and Joe start fastening rail as Rick and Dick screw on the rail joiners and Lew hands them the fill-in ties. Joe is using our tie lifter as Frank crimps the tie clips.
Dick and Wally Pausch continue joining the rails together with the rail plates and machine bolts. In spite of the light rain falling we managed to place the track up to the grade crossing.
