Open Meet: Part I - 6/17/2011


Kitty Shriver and Katie Pappas "manning" the check in table for the guests showing up for our Open Meet. Larry Goldsby at the controls of the electric powered steamer that he and his brother Alan, riding behind him, scratch-built and brought to run at our Open Meet are just pulling into the station.

Chris Cooper brought his scratch-built electric powered switcher to our Open Meet and is waiting for the traffic at the station to clear as well. Caught a glimse of Ted Nyland running through the woods on the Branch Line with his electric powered interurbans running light.
Ken Vendlinger gives a wave to the photographer as he passes through Shoe on his way to the Covered Bridge with his electric powered switcher. As we were pulling into the station Ted was outbound with his interurbans with our two way running with signals today.
Gracie stopped long enough at Horrendous for the photographer to get a picture of her at the controls of Grampa's train. You can see the two signal masts in this photo showing red as Ted and Ken wait for the block ahead of them to clear so they may acquire the yellow signal to proceed in turn.
Gracie waiting for the train ahead of her to get the acquired signal that is required before occupying the next block. Back at the steaming bays, Dick watches as Frank Foti readies "East Wind" for his boiler pressure test under the guidance of Roy and Linda Harris.
Dick Mackey, former owner of the Camelback engine, watches as Mike backs the train into a siding in front of the steaming bays. Ken clears the signal after coming down the hill from Hemlock to Fern upon leaving the block so our train can acquire the signal to proceed in the opposite direction over the same track.
Larry and Alan with Tom Pappas talk to Paul Emch about his electric powered NKP Hudson engine, complete with sound system, that has the batteries in the tender. Ted Nyland brought his American steam engine that he built and it currently is sitting on the engine lift after having been off loaded from his vehicle.
Dave Taylor of the Great Lakes Live Steamers brought his good looking rendition of a Canadian National diesel locomotive complete with his straddle riding cars. Ken and Paul loading up a flatbed trailer with railroad equipment that will be used in the Strawberry Festival Parade this afternoon that our club had been invited to participate in.
The club's passenger car purchased as a kit from Mountain Car and assembled by some of the club members and dedicated to Clyde and Ann Bliel was loaded and secured to the trailer.Ken, Mike and Kitty sitting on the trailer waiting for the parade to start with Edith Hacker standing alongside.
Kitty and Edith wait as Jerry Bell holds the handle of a wagon with a rough frame up of a caboose body hanging over the wagon that he will pull during the parade. Patrick Bell, Jerry's grandson, and Tim Bell, Jerry's son carried the Lake Shore Live Steamers banner in the parade.
Saturday morning we see the line of trains on the sidings at the end of the station with Dave Taylor. Dave standing between his CN diesel and the Alan & Larry Goldsby 0-6-0 switcher steam engine type train.
Marty Pinkston works on his Cli-Shay on one of the steaming bays with Richard Sales looking on as Frank Foti loads East Wind's tender with coal. Ken Vendlinger passing through Horrendous with his electric powered Reading Switcher.

Today we are dedicating our Covered Bridge in memory of Clyde Bleil, one of our charter members who lived just past 100 years old and this is the cake for the ceremony.
Erin, Bonnie Zaken, Linda, Claire, Dave and Jeff Foster gather on the pathway for our loading area for the public runs and enjoy the conversation. The photographer caught Roberta Uhrich, who is our club treasurer, heading for the station looking for her better half.
