Work Session- 9/05/2012

The picnic table behind the station needed to be rebuilt and here we have Harry Tabor who's working with Bob Pakeltis in rebuilding it as it was taken home, painted, brought back and needs reassembling with some new components that it needed. Bob's getting some fasteners for Harry for the bracing of the table.
See, working together can make the work go easier. In front of the station on the track I found a visitor that came to see what we were doing or maybe he was just sunning himself as he sat next to the points on the switch.
Wayne Boron and Frank Smoley test the electrical circuit for the lights that was in our old donation box as Bonnie Zaken tests the batteries that were in the station. Wayne had taken home the box to rebuild and paint, because it was in sad shape.
In front of the station, George Metts, Joe Banzer, Wayne Boron, Paul Zorko and Steve Smoley look over the Park engine as there was a leak as determined by the oil on the bed plate of the engine. While that was going on Steve Zaken was cutting the grass around the station with the powered push mower.
John Koontz continues with the fastening down of the rail to the ties for the siding that was heading to the crossing of the mainline that we were working on last week. John gets up to stretch his legs and looks at the progress he has made so far and we can see the crew have added more ballast to the track we laid last week.
Dick Clark brought his electric powered portable bandsaw so we stretched out the extension cord to the track shed and Dick proceeded to cut the steel rail for the crossing. Dick looking for the markings he made on the top of the rail so he knows where to dig out in between the ties for the bandsaw to clear.
The tie has been removed in the area of the next cut and the ballast has been dugout for clearance of the band saw to cut down through the steel rail. After Dick made the cuts, Bill Deptowicz removes the track panel and places it off to the side.
After scarfing out the existing ballast and dirt, the crossing was temporarily set in place to see if we had widened out the areas far enough so the panel could set level with the existing track height. The rail jointer clips were pounded on to the end of the steel rail on the crossing panel in preparation for the alignment to the existing steel rail.
Dick shown here using a file to remove any sharp edges from cutting the steel rail when the panel was made so the rail joiner clips will slide over easier. This is something we started to do lately, Dick and Rick have been bringing chairs and setting them out so we have the chance to get off our feet and sit down and relax and here Rick Nagy is taking advantage of that.
With the crossing connected to the mainline rails at each end, ballast was dumped on top of the track and Rick here is cleaning out the frogs and guard rails of the crossing. Here Rick is using the screwdriver as a tamping rod to settle the stone in between the steel ties of the crossing as Bob waits with the broom to finish sweeping.
