Work Session - 1/06/10

This work session we decided to paint the frame of our work engine and Rick Nagy and Steve Zaken work on removing the engine. Ken Brooks lends a hand trying to get a bolt removed.
Our power house for the work engine still bolted to the mounting plate but both are off the engine frame. As Rick scrapes the weatherseal for the cab off, Joe Banzer watches Steve removing the drive chain.
I don't think the engine has ever been dis-assembled down this far since it was scratch-built. Steve unbolting the Eaton drive unit from the frame.
Just a little too much torque on this allen wrench changes the design. Dick Clark checking out the progress of the dis-assembly of the engine as just the 90 degree gearbox has to be removed.
With everything removed they turned the frame upside down to examine it. Rick uses a wire brush to get the caked grease and mud off the bolster support as Joe and Dick discuss ways to limit the truck swing.
Bottom view of the frame shows alot of cleaning will be required to get it ready for paint. The lead truck and the power truck sitting on the table.
We took the frame over the cleaning pit and sprayed on a degreaser and let it set up for awhile. Frank Foti hosing off the frame to see how well the degreaser is working.
Even with the blast of water from the hose there was some stubborn areas of grease. Ken started scraping some of the tougher spots to loosen it up and more degreaser was applied.
After I found a cracked weld on the bolster support we decided it was made out of too thin metal and so Frank ground it off with a cut-off wheel.
