Work Session - 1/15/14

Ken Brooks, Wayne Boron, Dave Cryor, Rick Nagy, Steve Zaken and Dick Clark working on one of the center seat riding cars. With Dick, Dave and Wayne looking on, Ken is taking measurements of the wheelset.
We found when the wheel sets were taken apart that the bearings were destroying themselves even though they were lubed. Rick and Dick were checking the brake pads on the shoes for wear.
Steve Zaken, Aaron Slitz and Bonnie Zaken in a discussion and Aaron is trying to explain the point he is making. Rick in the background directing the transfer of another straddle seat rider car to the workbench as Ken and Wayne help.
With the car in position at the end of the table, the crew rolls it off the stand onto the table. Dick in the background watches so the truck doesn't turn causing the car to come off the table.
Wayne was remounting the rebuilt air compressor for the brake system on the engine. After the wheels were removed from the straddle car, the side frames taken off and cleaned up, this is what we found.
The first car that they worked on was taken off the table and a wheel sets removed from the second unit. We were fortunate enough a few years back to be able to acquire these heavy work tables that will support the weight of two engines easily.
These are eight-foot cars which two members own one and the other two are owned by the club in which all the bearings in the trucks are being checked out. They all have the heavyweight trucks with dual bearings at each end.
With the wear that we found on the end of the axles the wheels will have to be pressed off and set on new axles. A set of wheels from one truck that still need to be cleaned up.
