1.16.08 Work Session

The degreased side frames for the power trucks for our club's GP38 on our work table. George Woodling is filing the brake shoe pads to final shape for the trucks on our eight foot rider cars.
George Woodling and Lew Fowler work on adding a air tank reservoir to the engine for the air brakes. The aluminum air tank is temporarily clamped in place to check for fit.
George D. works on shortening the bracket as George W. waits for the vise so he can continue with the brakes shoes. While this is all taking place, Frank Foti sketches up the axles for sprocket and keyway location.
Bill Deptowicz took the axles over to the vertical steel cutting bandsaw and proceeded to cut them in halve so that the chain sprockets could be slid off along with the disc brake plates.
If you remember from the last group of pictures we found that the wheels were welded to the axles. In the machine shop, Frank was shown how to run the big lathe to cut the welds off up to the face of the wheels.
After the welds were trimmed off on both sides of the wheel we used a arbor press to press out the axles. Back at the engine George was drilling the bracket to match up with bolts on the engine and for the bracket bolt to clamp the tank on.
The wheels, sprockets and discs for the brakes with the cut axles on the edge of the table. Frank was using the vertical bandsaw to cut the brake material to size for the shoes.
The engine looks pretty well striped down at this point without it's trucks. A view from the right front side with the chassis resting on blocks.
A closeup of the left rear bolster point on the engine with the hydraulic motor and brake caliper lying on the table. Same side of engine but up front looking at the 16 H.P. Briggs and Stratton "Vanguard" gas engine.
I wonder if these guys are going to be able to put the engine all back together again in running condition .....and what do we do with the leftover parts???????
On our rider car George Davidson made the wooden mounts for two air tanks for the brakes, that will be mounted under the seat of the straddle riding car. The tanks shown in position in the car.
