Work Session - 10/02/13

Bob Pakeltis took on the task of painting the octagon picnic table that's behind the train station before winter sets in. Bob flipped it up so he could paint underneath the seats and the support stringers.
With the table propped up against the tree, it made easy work of painting underneath it. Wayne Boron helped me to get the old reflector off the signal release post where I was going to install the new metal reflector.
On the lift by the switch shed, Bob Beardslee, who had brought a bigger welder, was welding the bracket on our ballast car with help from Frank Smoley. Frank and Bob discussing the electrodes sizes.
Out by Gillette, Ken Brooks and Frank Foti remove the sign, which happens to have a tree stump right alongside of it. After having dug around the edges, Frank attacks the stump with a pick as Ken looks on.
When Frank tired of swinging the pick, John Koontz attacks it with an axe to cut the roots leading away from the main stump. As the crew takes a break, it looks like the stump is winning out.
It's a hard defined stump that is severely resisting being removed. Meanwhile Bill Deptowicz continued replacing the reflectors on the signal release posts, this one is by Fern which blazes from the camera flash.
Same shot without using the flash on the camera showing the reflector, which we used semi trailer reflector tape on an 1/8 inch thick aluminum plate. After all the rain the fungus was thriving on an old dead log at Bruce.
Closer view of the fungus as it was growing on the bark of the old log. A view of the trees that the Park had cut down at Fern which really opened up the area to light.
A view looking from Hilde Hill towards Fern showing how the felled trees open up the area. The view you would see while riding on the tracks as you come down the grade from Hemlock.
Switch release post for the block that ends at Filmor with the old reflector removed so the new one can be attached. Back at Gillette the guys were adding fill around the stakes in the right-a-way as the grade is low in this area.
Dick Clark is shoveling fill dirt in the area where the new switch will be tied into the Branch Line between High Creek and Filmor as Frank walks back to get another shovelful. The right-a-way is being built up slowly and we will give it a chance to settle over the winter.
