10.12.05 Work Session

The work crew last Wednesday scarfed the top soil off at the end of the yard to use the soil as fill at Filmor where a bridge will be installed past the new mainline crossings.
At Filmor you can see the newly deposited soil for the right-a-way that will create a crossing an a need for the bridge. View looking South.
This week we are putting in a switch in the yard to create a stub siding. Dick Clark looking over the area after we removed the existing rail where the new switch will be installed.

Joe Banzer, George Davidson, Tom Reder and Lou Fowler taking a break after cleaning out the old ballast for the new switch. Saw a dead raccoon by our train shed and notified the ranger station if they wanted to check it out.

Dick is marking the rail at the end of the new switch for cutting as Joe watches. Lou and Tom are checking the bolted rail joiners to make sure they are tight.
The switch is in place and being bolted to the existing rail. Edith Hacker is placing some stone around the drainage pipe.
Ties that already have the rail clips attached have been placed in position. Existing ballast removed and ties placed up to the tree for the stub siding.

View from the other end of the switch with the rail laid out on the ties. As the crew in the foregound fasten down the rail the ballast is being spread on the ties behind them.

Dave Foster brought his backpack blower and was cleaning off leaves from the rails and right-a-way. It's alot easier to remove them now than in the spring when they are all soggy and wet.
Ballasting continued at one end and the rails were joined together and crimped down to gage at the other end.
The new switch is in and the stub siding is completed right up to the tree. The portion of the bridge that we removed last year at Cider Bridge has found a new home across a drainage ditch by Zenith.

Looking north towards Zenith you can see the stakes for the new right-a-way. A view looking back over the position of the replaced bridge section on the right-a-way.

A section of track, that we removed from the yard for the stub siding, sitting on the earth fill at Zenith. The earth fill continues toward Filmor. Hopefully it will settle over the winter.

View looking West to Filmor with the earthen fill to the left. This view looks back toward Zenith and shows the curvature of the right-a-way.

We found another tree had fallen over on our tracks across Dirt Siding and the Short Line. It doesn't look like it did any damage to the track this time.

Dirt Siding in foreground, couldn't show picture of removal as six of us lifted it up and carried the tree into the woods. A view of Bruce where we almost put in that bridge section from Cider Bridge.
