"East Wind" Express Holiday Run - 12/06/14

Frank Foti has East Wind up on one of the steaming bays and is loading the firebox up with charcoal briquettes soaked in kerosene on this cool slightly wet day. With the fire catching on, Frank adds coal to the firebox to heat the water in the boiler.
East Wind came to the track today with a wreath around his headlight commemorating the festive Christmas season, but no Christmas lights. Ken Brooks with one of the first load of passengers around the track as he passes through Pandora on his way towards Shoe.
Mike Harkleroad passes by the same location with the club's diesel switcher and you can tell it's cold by the way the passengers are all bundled up. Rick Nagy with the club's GP38 has just passed over Cider Bridge and about to pass through Thorn as he nears the end of his run.
East Wind and Frank after passing over Cider Bridge willl soon rumble over Festival Bridge on his way back into the station with his passengers. Kenny running Paul Zorko's Fireball Express as he passes through Horrendous on his way towards Zip Junction.
Mike was the next to pass by as he heads towards Horrendous with his cold passengers, because of the wind chill, when you're on a moving train in the cold weather. Rick passes by Drudgery with a full load of passengers and Lou DeLembo is his conductor on the rear.
At almost the same location here comes, I don't know.... With all that smoke it must be Frank, as he's the only one with a steam engine today, as he passes through Drudgery. Kenny with his passengers as he approaches Hemlock and will soon start the grade down to Fern.
Rick with his trainload of passengers passes through Horrendous and will soon start the grade down through Filmor towards Gulch Bridge. Mike having passed through Drudgery looks back to check on the passengers as he heads towards Hemlock.
Frank and East Wind, who is hardly working, passes by through Horrendous and soon will start down the grade towards Gulch Bridge. Kenny running over the crossing for the Branch Line at Filmor with the clickety-clack, clickety-clack of the wheels on the steel rail.
Mike at the same location is all smiles as is his passengers as they pass by the Plate Truss Bridge on the Branch Line. Coming off the Truss Bridge is Rick with his load of passengers as he heads for the grade crossing for the Park Access Road and Mackey's Run.
East Wind thundering across the Truss Bridge as he starts gaining speed with whistle blowing for the grade crossing and the grade up through Mackey's Run to Big Bend Bridge. A second shot caught Frank and the riders behind him as they exit the bridge.
After passing through Fern, Ken heads towards the big Truss Bridge with his passengers and it is still cold out. Mike coming down the grade from Gulch as he crosses over Bridge No. 6 and heads for the Truss Bridge.
Ken rumbles over the Gulch Bridge with his passengers and is about to start up the grade which is 3 1/2+ degrees up to get to High Creek. Mike with his trainload of passengers is just coming off Patty's Rock Bridge as he's westbound on the mainline.
Rick as he coasts down past the double crossovers at Gulch on his way down the grade to Hilde Hill and Fern on this wet day as it had rained most of the night and part of the morning before we started the run. East Wind coming down the grade from Hilton as he approaches Gulch allowing Frank and the passengers to enjoy a good ride.
Further up the hill, Ken with a new load of passengers has just passed through Hilton and will start coasting down the grade to Fern on this damp cold day. Frank with East Wind as they pass over the Zenith Culvert on his way up the 3 1/2+% grade from Gulch Bridge.
Ken with his passengers passes through Horrendous and will soon start downgrade towards Filmor on this blustery day. As I headed back towards the station I caught Rick having just departed the station with another load of passengers as he makes his way over the Park Access Road grade crossing.
After just leaving the station Frank just threw the switch in front of the steaming bays for the track to the ash pit dump for the steamers. By the time I got a cup of coffee and warmed up Mike Harkleroad, standing, had just loaded Frank's passengers and East Wind is slowly pulling away from Shriver Station.
Ken prepares to leave the station as Mike watches, after loading the train and giving the riders the instructions. Paul Emch has his train all loaded and waits for Mike to finish the riding instructions before he leaves the station.
As cold as it was, Paul's passengers still managed to give a smile to the photographer for this photo before they departed the station. Mike bundled up against the cold waits for the next train to arrive and you can see the line is not very long for this run mainly due to the cold temperatures.
Edith Hacker waits at the station to help with the unloading of the trains as Rick slowly rolls to a stop and that's Lou DeLembo on the rear as his conductor. Ken was next to roll into the station with his passengers under the watchful eye of Edith where the passengers will unload.
Not much of a line left for the passengers waiting to ride a train as we wait for another train to come into the station. Lou stands at the station as Paul arrives back with his passengers with Judy Oscker to aid with the unloading. Many thanks to the public for their support this year.
