2.28.07 Work Session

Work continues on the crossing as Chris heats up the end of the guard rail for Frank Foti to bend it 15 degrees. One by one the guard rails are heated, bent and quenched in water.
The guard rail ends look like this after bending. Chris is applying heat to a short guard rail which will have the end bent.
All the guard rails are bent and the next step is to move to the welding station. Dick Clark, Rick Nagy and George Woodling discuss the end of the rail overhanging the plate as we wait for the welder.
George keeps pressure on the rail so it doesn't twist and lift the foot of the rail off the plate while shielding his eyes. Tone is applying weld between the rails so the welds won't be one sided.
Bill Deptowicz is grinding the railhead for the flange clearances at the crossing rails. The spacer at left between the rails is used to check the clearance after grinding the railheads.
The finished 41 degree crossing ready to be loaded only needs to be painted before cutting it into our rails at the park. Dick, Rick and George Davidson started on the second crossing cutting the rails to length.
Frank is milling the angle on the end of the rails to fit up to the mainline rails of the crossing. George and Rick watch as Dick marks the rail and George deburrs the end of the rail with a file.
