Work Session - 6/24/15

Perry Taylor trying to pick up the loose mud around the pipe leak we have on our air line at a steaming bay. The holes not quite big enough to see what's going on but it's filling up with ground water from all the rain we have had lately.
Perry uses a narrow spade to open up the hole to see what kind of connection we have at the bottom of the pipe where we know there is an elbow. This is what we found, this plastic pipe feeding our air supply line to the steaming bay.
Engine maintenance crew was working on the Park engine behind the Stanek Car Barn. Wayne Boron and Frank Smoley were working on the granary structure to repair the base that was partially rotted out.
They made a new base for the granary to sit on as the plywood didn't take to being wet from the location it was in. Checking back at the air line leak we can see the hole has been filling up with groundwater and the leaking air creating the bubbles.
After we remove some of the links of rail, Ron Trenhaile was using a brush to sweep the ballast off the tie plates we use for aluminum rail. Because this portion is on a curve the outside rail has been wearing so it finally needs replacing.
Snapped this picture of Dick Clark on the north leg at Sharp, bringing the work train up to our area with some more tools. Frank Foti fastening the rail down with screws after the rail joiner clips attached, placed and the rail gauges in place.
Ron resets the rail gauges as Frank screws down the rail moving towards Ron as Ron Malinowski watches the work progress. Here we can see we have two 10 foot links of steel rail fastened down as work continues.
Dick sits back on the engine and takes a break as Ron and Frank continue with the fastening of the rail down to the ties. We were fortunate that it wasn't a real hot day today.
At the end of Horrendous looking towards High Creek, where the railroad ties are we are going to put a new signal bridge that Greg Guy built, across the two tracks. Greg Guy and Perry strapped the railroad ties to two, two wheeledl dollies and are making their way towards Horrendous.
Being fixed axles they don't turn to good so they physically had to manhandle the load to get it turned. Here we see the load partially turned and ready to be pushed towards Horrendous.
With Greg pushing and Perry pulling they make their way towards Horrendous and they only have three more trips to make. Back on the secondary mainline between Sharp and Kneeling the replacement of the rail continues.
Another steel rail has been placed down after bending it to match the curve and Frank continues with the work of fastening it down. With Ron at adjusting the tie spacing underneath the rail Frank continues with fastening the rail with the screws.
Wayne and Frank after adding the new base to the granary carry it over to its location just east of the station. The guys decided to set the granary up on two by fours to keep it out of the water and here Wayne levels the grade where the granary will sit.
The granary leveled and set in place and hopefully will last for a few more years before it needs more attention thanks to Frank and Wayne. Ron aligns the last piece of steel rail that we are replacing in this section.
Ron relocates the rail gauges as Frank moves along fastening down the new steel rail. De la Cruz getting close to the end of the required work for this little project.
We replaced 50 feet of the outside rail with steel rail because of the existing aluminum rail wearing. With the work train all loaded up with the tools Dick heads towards the toolshed where we will unload the train.
