Work Session - 7/01/15

Perry Taylor was already working on the leaky air fittings when I got to the track this morning. New fittings were purchased to replace the existing ones because one of the old ones had a crack in the flange and here Perry has them in place.
We had an extremely heavy rain last night and everything was just mud and here Wayne Boron is laying on the tarp and fitting up some pipe to come up above grade as Frank Foti watches. Perry had brought his mower but I think the grass is going to be too wet behind the station.
Josh Frank, George Metts, Perry with his back to us and Steve Zaken have a conversation going. Perry, Frank Smoley, Dave Hird, George Metts, Bonnie Zaken, Ron Malinowski and Steve Zaken up at the station with a light sprinkle of rain coming down.
Greg Guy come out a couple days after our last work session and set up the signal bridge at the beginning of Horrendous westbound. You can see the railroad ties that he used for the foundation of the signal bridge.
This view taken from High Creek looking towards Horrendous and we have about 6'-3" clearance from the ballast to the underside of the truss of the signal bridge. According to Greg Guy that built and painted the unit, the square blank blockouts are going to be for the mailbag emblem.
Looking up grade from Filmor towards Horrendous you can see how the runoff water was really roaring through there to create the pattern that it did. Looking down the grade towards Patty's Rock Bridge we can see the pile up of leaves left by the water.
In a trench alongside our track just above Patty's Rock Bridge you can see it washed down alot of ballast from our roadbed. Quite a bit of ballast washed down as the water cascaded underneath Patty's Rock Bridge during the rain.
A closer look of how the water turned and went underneath Patty's Rock Bridge at the bottom of the grade. This is about 10 feet from Patty's Rock Bridge and the ballast shows up in the waterway.
Later on in the day I see the signal bridge had acquired American flags which in construction when the last beam is placed the flag flies from it. The sun came out and the crew worked on ballasting with Ron Malinowski and Greg Guy spreading ballast from the work train at Horrendous, placing it between the tracks.
Dick Clark levels the track with Bob Pakeltis behind him tamping the ballast as Frank Foti in the background with the work train waits to come up with the ballast car. Dick using the level and a large screwdriver to lift the track and level it.
After getting another load of ballast Frank moves slowly ahead with the slides open on the ballast car dropping the limestone ballast alongside of the track. With the chute gates on the ballast car pulled on one side this is how the ballast spreads down.
The crew went for another load of ballast so they could finish the track in the foreground as Dick takes a breather sitting on the grade wall in the background. Back up at the station by the steaming bays, the guys had finished the repairs on the plumbing and the hole was filled in so that takes care of another task.
