Work Session - 8/05/15

Today we are going to reballast some track and Matthew Bolyard and Ken Brooks "dig in" to the task of filling the ballast car. The first section is at Hilde Hill as Frank Foti runs the engine as Ken and Matthew watch the progress.
Slowly, Frank makes his way down the grade depositing ballast on one side of the track only. The chute gate plate has been pried open and the limestone ballast drops to the ties as the engine slowly pulls the car along.
Matthew sweeping the ballast along side of the rail to level it out. Looking back from Bridge #6 which is an elevated track section built up on dirt and bounded by railroad ties.
Continuing around the track, the crew lays down ballast between Fern and the Truss Bridge. We get settlement in this area because it is a wet area and the lowest point on our track so when you can see the end of the ties we add ballast.
Frank still had ballast in the car so he backed up depositing what was left of this load. Up at the station Ken Vendlinger was cutting the grass with the riding mower.
Frank resting after sweeping down the ballast on the track recently deposited. Matthew sweeping as Frank controls the chute on the ballast car with Ken running the engine between Sharp and Keeling.
With the ballast car empty Frank grabs the chute gate from the rear of the car to put it back under the chute. Matthew working with the broom to level out the ballast along the rails.
Ken working with the weed whip cutting grass between the rail and areas where the riding or push mower can't cut. A view looking East from Shriver Station at some of the reballasted track we worked on today.
