Work Session - 4/06/16

Dave Hird who is on the switch maintainance committee was busy cleaning out debris and lubricating the switch throws. Ken Brooks and Ron Malinowski were checking out mowers and starting them up, getting ready for the cutting season.
Ken trying to start the riding mower but they found the battery needed a charge. Wayne Boron picking up leaves and debris in front of the station.
Frank Smoley after raking debris into a pile, starts picking it up. Ron Malinowski, Wayne and Frank continue with the cleaning up in front of the station.
The crew continues filling the wheelborrow load after load. Back at the Stanek Car Barn, Frank Foti is drilling the end plates on a gondola for the schrader air valve to be fitted so the car can be located anywhere in the train.
A closeup showing the air valve mounted on the end plate of the gondola ready for the air line to be connected. Paul Emch swivels the truck to check if the air hose could possibly rub on the wheels.
Paul runs the air line to the other end of the car and then fastens the line with zip ties to the frame of the car making sure that everything clears. John Riba(at right) was having a problem with the rear power truck on his diesel and Ken Brooks helped him remove it.
A view looking down on the power truck that's driven from a jackshaft between the two trucks. Apparently the key that rides in the keyway at right was falling out of the universal and it will be replaced with a longer one.
A view of the control box for his electric powered diesel that has a sound system in it also. The truck on a adjacent track with the half piece of the jack shaft laying on top of it that John is taking home to check it out.
After putting a set of car trucks under the front end the guys pushed the engine back into the storage shed. You will note that the universals on the jackshaft are the steel ones that are smaller than the cast iron ones.
A closer look at the 90 degree gearbox and the end of the steel universal. Inside the Stanek Car Barn, Frank drills the end plate on the second car for the air valves as Ron watches.
Since the end plates were so thick the holes had to be countersunk because the schrader valves only have so many threads on the shaft for tighening them in place. Paul fitting the air hose on the fitting as Frank watches.
As Paul updates the info we keep on the cars, Frank gets ready to drill holes on the third car. The tree service people moved our extra ties we have on pallets, John Koontz is picking up and relocating the loose ones to their location.
