Work Session - 4/27/16

Wayne Boron(foreground), Frank Smoley and Ron Trenhaile check the hoses for the brakes on a straddle riding car. John Riba removing the swevel seat on a engineers car to check out the air compressor underneath as to why it isn't working.
Dave Hird who is part of the switch maintainance crew, checks, cleans and lubricates the switch throw mechanism for the switch leading into the Orchard Yard by the station. Bonnie Zaken making up the desert bowls for lunch.
Another look at the bent rails we acquired from the tree removal which will be one of the projects for today. When the tree fell it really did a number on this section of track.
We worked on the left hand track previously and today we are going to replace the damaged rail on the right side. When the tree fell it also damaged the ring rail for our turntable by driving it into the ground.
Ron checking out the points of a switch which typically is a following switch, checking that the points lay flat against the stationary rail. The battery on the mower had too little of a charge to spin the motor so the battery charger was connected up to it.
Frank Foti works to get the existing ties near the end of the track removed and replace them before fastening the replacement rail in place. Our track to our ballast pile was also damaged so we removed the track.
We could use these three sections of rail for a funhouse ride by maybe adding a vertical curve into it. Oops! From the other end of it we see it already has a vertical curve.
With new rail brought over, the existing sections are moved out of the way. Ken Brooks watches as the truck with 20 some tons of ballast is being delivered.
After turning his truck around the driver watches Ken as he backs his rig down to the ballast pile area. Ken has signaled that the truck is in the right spot and the driver starts dumping the stone.
Ron and Frank continued to replace rail while the ballast was being delivered and have almost finished the job. Using the turntable to check for rail length, the replacement rail is being cut to the length required.
