Tremendous Trains Program - 7/11/18

.
The 10 o'clock group has assembled around the steaming bays as Scott Hewis gives the talk on the operations of steam engines and diesel engines. Next up Scott gave a description of the railroad cars and the type of loads they will be used for.
The kids seem fascinated with the stock-car and the cows that are inside. Here Scott describes the uses of a depressed center car and the possible heavy loads they will carry.
Scott went on to describe the flat cars, hopper cars and the boxcars with the type of loads they might carry. While the Tremendous Trains Program was going on Frank Smoley was in working on one of our grade crossings to replace the ties under the rails.
Ron Trenhaile is helping Frank removing the debris that was in between the ties in the formed trough of the existing concrete foundation. Ken Brooks with the clubs GP 38 takes the first trainload of attendees for a ride.
Dick Scott using the club's nickel plate switcher departs the station with another load of passengers. Next to depart Shriver Station is John Riba with his GP 9 diesel engine and passengers.
Ken with another load of passengers as he passes through Drudgery on his way towards Hilton. On a workbench, Frank was cutting the ties to length to fit the trough in our grade crossing foundation.
Frank Smoley spacing the ties in the trough as Frank Foti behind him talks with John Koontz as Dennis Crislip carries more ties over. Frank's getting to the end of the trough with placement of ties.
With the rails in place and the gauge bars holding the rail, Frank Foti gets ready to fasten the rails down to the ties. Back up at the steaming bays the 1 o'clock group has shown up and Scott is into his description of the workings of a steam engine.
Scott modified the technicality description of the workings of a steam engine to fit the three different age groups that we had in attendance today for the three programs. Scott started with the caboose at the end and described each car and their uses.
Scott answering some questions that the kids asked of him. With the description portion of the program over the kids look forward to the ride on a train that followed and here John departs the station.
Ken just started putting the big engine in motion after Paul Emch loaded the cars with passengers. Dick on the backside of the loop coming back into the station with his group of riders.
John with his riders as he passes through Mackey's Run on his way to the Big Bend Bridge. The work crew has finished fastening down the rail and have added the wood in between the rails and alongside for the vehicle traffic that we expect on the access road.
A view looking from the end of the crossing showing how the boards were placed leaving clearance for the wheel flanges and any debris that may accumulate. Frank fastening down the center boards.
Let's be frank about this, the two Frank's are fastening down boards at the end of the grade crossing. With that task completed I went back to the station and Scotty was already in progress with the 3 o'clock group.
This group of kids were little bit older and the talk held their attention better as Scotty described the different engines that pull trains. Once again Scotty went through the description of the cars and the type of loads that they may carry.
Once again the stock car with cows won out with the attention of the kids. Scott describing the log car and how felled trees are moved to the lumber mill.
This time John's train is the first to be loaded as he departs the station with his charge of passengers. With the riding instruction given by Paul is almost over Paul Zorko's getting ready to take his passengers for a ride.
Dick Scott puts the shifter in forward and the train starts moving down the mainline for his next run. Alex Bruchec looks at the riders after arriving back at the station and Paul is using their phones and taking pictures for them.
