Work Session at Fosters - 4/01/10

Bill Deptowicz went over to Dave Fosters in Sandusky to assemble the riding cars that he had all the steel precut to size and Dave started welding. Some of the end pieces and cross members waiting to be jigged up on the steel box beam.
The project called for dropped center riding cars that are six and a half feet long that Dave is welding the side joint on the front side. Three sets of side frames that were jigged up on the box beam and tack welded in place with two main tube frames welded up.
We had clamped the side and end pieces together and the 1" x 2" center frame tube and squared everything and tack welded it in place. Here Dave is welding the side frame to the car end sill.
You can see the mitered joints for the main tube frame and side frames in this view for the drop center section. The first one finished and laying flat on the concrete to check if it warped during welding and it checked out very good.
Dave doing the finish welding to the side frame mitered joints that were down on the box beam jig surface when it was aligned and tack welded. Dave welding the main frame tube to the end sills of the car.
The end of the car with the end sill drilled for the brake fittings and the u-bolts for the safety chains and you can see the bolster supports for the trucks. Dave is welding in place the braces to stiffen the side frames.
The work continues with the placement and welding of the braces at each end of the car. Another six and a half foot long car frame is started.
Everything is clamped into place to keep it in alignment as he welds the frame together. The goal is six 6 1/2 foot long rider cars and four 5 foot long conductor cars all with similar drop center construction.
