4.29.07 Work Session

We had a Sunday work session and when I got there George Metts had been working on the clubs work engine grinding the valves for a tune-up.
George in the process of putting the engine back together. At the end of the yard by the ditch Frank Foti watches Dick Clark as he tries to use a come-along to move a big stone.
Dick starts taking a strain on the chain by racheting the come-along. The object of Dicks desire or at least the stone with the chain wrapped around it -- wanting it to be moved.
Between the tree and the stone the stone gave in and started being pulled towards the tree. Dick plays out more line from the come-along to get a hold on the chain closer to the stone.
With the stone up by the tree we started digging the holes for the bridge abutments. The abutment, a cedar beam 14 inches square, has already been placed on the opposite side of the ditch and backfilled with gravel.
George Woodling is taking a turn digging out the hole. A view towards the two new diamonds we installed on Branch Line with Frank taking a breather from digging.
Frank and Dick filling the wheelborrow that we used to move the dirt away with. We checked the required depth of excavation by placing a beam from one abutment and using a level and then measuring down to the bottom of the hole.
Two more pictures as the guys check the slope we need to meet the track behind Dick from the existing yard track for the diamond.
Dick measuring from the track down which will be the height of the next abutment for support of the steel beams we are using. George is digging out for clearance of the steel beams.
The cedar beam in the foreground with the rail tongs will be the new abutment. Dick checking the cedar beam for being level as it is setting in stone ballast.
With the abutments set we placed the steel beams in place and that wraps up this work session for today. We had two different depths of steel beams so one will be shimmed if you noticed.
