Work Session - 5/01/13

Dave Cryor using the small mower to cut the grass on the hillside in front of the train station where the riding mower can't cut. Ken Brooks was cutting the grass by our parking area where we unload our trains.
One of the things that we noticed for the last run was the switch lever was slipping on the shaft and not properly throwing the switch going into the yard so Rick Nagy is taking the cover off to check it out. Frank Smoley was giving him a hand to see what the problem was.
Frank checking the throw on the linkage at the switch points operated by the remote switch control. Back at the station, Ken Brooks talks with George Metts, who is holding the ladder so Lew Fowler our "resident" plumber solders in the water line for our new water heater.
Dave Foster and Ken lay a rail across the existing rail to determine the angle of a crossing required as Frank Foti operates the ballast sweeper. Dick Clark using the the club's GP38 pushes the ballast car as Rick watches the flow rate dropping on the track.
Joe Banzer, Steve and Wayne Boron work on a set of trucks checking out the brakes on one of the cars that was "bad ordered". Back at the station Edith Hacker was trying to clean up the mess under the sink on the floor and you can see the new water heater with the two old heaters that it is replacing as George Metts and Don Speidel watch.
The ballasting of one of the secondary lines in front of the steaming bays is almost complete with just the little bit of the ballast needing to be leveled that the ballast sweeper couldn't reach. The two old hot water heaters that we are replacing sitting on the floor prior to the removal from the station.
I guess we haven't tired out Lew that much as he can still smile even though he's got more soldering to do to connect in the new hot water tank. A view of the new hot water tank sitting up on it's shelf in the station above the sink.
The crew moved up in front of the station to re-ballast the mainline and here Dick opens the shoot gates as Rick moves the work train forward slowly. With the plate pulled out the limestone ballast drops and because of the height setting the car actually levels out the ballast as it goes along.
The guys are now working where we unload the passengers to help build that area back up again as it has a slight depression around the track. Following behind the guys Frank operates the ballast sweeper which does a nice job and Bob Pakeltis follows behind Frank sweeping and leveling the edge of the ballast.
Bob continues with his sweeping leveling out the ballast so we don't have the ridge left by the sweeper on the edge of its swath. A look down at the track that was re-ballasted all way past the station. It was a good days work today.
