Public Run - 6/01/14

In the switch building shed, Ken Brooks looks for a part as Ted Nyland and Wally Pausch place ties on the switch building jig. We procured some beams to replace the ones on the bridge for the Branch Line that were rotting out.
One train had a problem at the last run with this section the track so Dick Clark is checking and leveling it where required. The Branch Line bridge has most of the bridge beams removed and here's Marty Pinkston, Greg Guy, Ken Brooks and our supervisor George Metts.
You can see in this view that there was a switch on the bridge that has been removed along with the approach tracks. Marty rolls the last beam out of its position in preparation to discard it.
With Greg behind Marty holding one end and Ken the other end you can see right through the rotted out hole in the beam behind Marty's hand. Dick, our track master, came over to check out the progress as the crew starts putting down bricks for the bridge abutments.
Lew Fowler and Bill Besselman showed up as Marty and Greg place and level the support bricks for the bridge abutments. After determining the height they need due to beam thickness, Greg taps the bricks to level them.
Gee, just like in the old days of building skyscrapers when they used to throw hot rivets to the riveters, here we see Ken pitching a brick to Marty which is airborne and midway between them right now. Work continues with the bricks being laid for the foundation.
Wayne Boron, Frank Smoley and Joe Banzer are working on the neutral indent point for the shift lever as we had an incident with a dead battery and jumping it with the engine starting up in gear much to the detriment of NKP 875 caboose in the pit behind the engine. Joe checking for a minor leak in the air system.
The track crew getting more ballast to level the bricks for the bridge abutments on the Branch Line. The section of track at Horrendous that Dick Clark checked out and leveled has been ballasted.
The crew finished laying the bricks for the abutments and laid the three wooden beams in place across the span. The new beams should hold up for many more years before they too will have to be replaced.
The engine maintenance crew said they created a deeper notch for the center point of the shifter switch so hopefully this will rectify the problem we encountered. While all this was going on Mike Harkleroad had Don Speidel's speeder up on the lift and working on the undercarriage.
