Work Session - 5/22/2013

Ken Vendlinger working with the weed whip around the steaming bays track supports where the push mower won't be able to get. Kenny's a good worker when it comes to the lawn care around the station, which is a weekly chore.
Hal Seiler was using the push mower to cut the grass around the fencing area where the riding mower can't navigate. We're fortunate enough to have workers that will come every week and cut grass around the station, which is our responsibility and not the parks.
Today the track crew was re-ballasting a section of the secondary main at Horrendous and in the distance, we see John Koontz tamping the ballast between the ties. John continues to tamp the ballast after Dick Clark checked the track for being level.
In this low angle view you can see how the ballast car dumps the ballast to the side of the rail and that's Dick in the background. Dick using the ballast sweeper on the section that was just ballasted and tamped to clear the ballast from the top of the ties.
I think Dick is pleased, as we no longer have to use the push broom to clear the track of ballast which can get very tiresome when you're doing a lot of ballasting. John brings in another load of ballast in our specially made hopper car using the club's GP 38, instead of our small work engine 101, because of the weight of the ballast car.
Dick Clark and Frank Smoley watch as John spreads ballast on the outside rail of the approach to Big Bend Bridge. Dick uses a shovel to adjust the flow gate on the rear section of the ballast hopper car before John moves the train.
