5.25.05 Work Session

View of Zip Junction looking North down Short Line and the beginning of the new Branch Line. Rails have been extended beyond the fallen tree going down hill towards the Truss Bridge.
The rails below the fallen tree with a grade of 3%+ and 45 foot radius curves in some places. Over a foot of ballast helped keep the grade managable.
The different types of bridge construction that we used to cross over the swale. View from above the rails showing that the bridge sections vary in width for the curved and straight sections of rail.

The end of the bridge and looking ahead to the crossing at the Park's access road that weaves through our railroad. View looking back at the Branch Line bridge just above the Truss Bridge.

Standing on the Branch Line with the track merging from the Ahlin Y. Dick Clark screwing the ties down to the bridge beams so they don't move under the traffic.
Tom Reder and Dick adding shims under the ties for the super-elevation to the track so the engine and train will lean into the curves. Edith Hacker cleaning out one of the many drainage pipes.

Dick starting to screw down the guard rails on the bridge. George Davidson, Dave Foster and George Metts taking a break, a two and a half inch break as Dick would say...the length of a cigarette.

Break over, work continues on fastening down the guard rails on the bridge. George and Dave continue with the fastening of the rails.
The completed bridge with the guard rails fastened down and ready for trains. Dick sweeping the excess ballast from between the rails that we put down after checking the alignment of the track once more.

Don Spiedel works on adding a drain at the end of the transfer table by the car barn. Dave making up another track panel for the siding alongside of the Ahlin Y as Dick dumps ballast on track behind him.

George and Dave at the assembly table and Dick on the siding waiting for the last track panel. Frank Foti, Dick and George placing ballast on the newly laid siding.

Loaded the work table on the train to move it to the next location. Ron Trenhaile and Jerry Bell work out a problem with the switch to the Branch Line as Jerrys' wife Jane watches.

The new kitchen cabinets have arrived with Karl Losely working and Roger Harnish, Robbi Haines and Frank Foti in discussion. Roger placing shims behind the cabinet as Karl is sizing up another pair.

Karl fastening one of the cabinets, after leveling it, to the wall. Frank, George and Dick place and tamp the leftover ballast at Cider Bridge to level out the track.

Frank, Ron, Dick and Rex Shriver discuss the switch points and the change to steel ones. All in all it was a good work day, we finished the Branch Line that has over 1100 feet of track in six weeks in time for the Open Meet.
