5.28.08 Work Session

I got to the track a little after nine and found Rick Nagy cutting the grass behind the station. The Park had ground up the stumps that were by our loading area and George Woodling was hauling dirt in to fill the hole up.
George Metts brought his excavator so we could dig out the area to his left. The TrackMaster decided we would extend the siding along the steaming bay so Bill Deptowicz removed the grass and leveled out the dirt for the track extension.
Found Dave Foster operating the excavator and loading the trailer with Ted Nyland helping. Poor Edith Hacker, she's been replaced by mechanical equipment for today. Oh well, she deserves the time off!
The task at hand today is to finish the adjacent track for two way operating through Summit. Ken Vendlinger was helping Ted dump the trailer loads of dirt that Dave was loading by the Switch Shed.
Frank Foti, George Woodling, Rick and Dick Clark discuss the merits of the track panels. George screws the rail down as Ken uses the tie lifter to hold the ties tight against the rail.
Dick using the battery operated saw to cut the aluminum rail to length. Frank and George are installing the rail joiners to the rails that Dick just cut.
Down at the switches at Ahlin Jerry Bell and Ron Trenhaile earlier this week installed a remote throw with a rod leading down to one of the switches. Frank is about to add the ties under the rail joiners.
Jerry and Ron are working on another switch at Gruffer and are changing the switch mechanism to the other side of the track. The ballast has been dumped on the new section of track up to the crossing.
About twentyfive feet from the switch points the guys are installing two new ties to support the remote switch stand. The excavator has been loaded up and now we have another lane of access to unload equipment at our lift.
Ken Brooks and Dick are ripping the "plastic" wood board for the crossing planks. Dick is setting the screws in as Ken holds the side boards in place.
George is putting in the screws to hold the top boards in a zig-zag pattern to control warpage. This is what the finished remote controller looks like, you can see the rod behind it supported by ties.
The piles of dirt that were transported by Ted with the tractor and dumped near Gruffer. When the side boards on the crossing are finally installed we will be able to ballast that section.
The ballast has been put in place, tamped and graded along the crossing. Working at the end near Summit, Rick is sweeping the rail as Ken is tamping the stone to pack and settle it in.
A view from Summit of the switches and the new track added and the guys taking a break. Heading to the station I found Kitty Shriver helping Jerry replacing ties for another remote switch throw at Short with Rex Shriver overseeing. A great day for all that we got accomplished.
