Work Session - 5/22/2013

Today's goal is to install the crossing in the foreground and that's Ken Brooks, Frank Foti, John Koontz, Rick Nagy, Skip Frank and Frank Smoley by the tree. After we positioned the crossing, Dick Clark marked the existing rail as to where to cut it as Ken and John watch.
John and Ken work to unbolt the rail joiners for the aluminum rail that will be affected by the section of the new crossing. Here we see John taking out the screws that hold the aluminum rail down onto the ties.
Frank Foti is adding a couple screws to the switch that was already in place as Dick and Bob Beardslee watch the progress. The existing rail has been cut and removed for locating the new crossing as Dick works on the rail joiners and John removes some screws to replace ties with Frank overseeing.
The new crossing track panel didn't fit quite right. So more existing ballast has to be dug out as the guys survey the problem. Dick wasn't satisfied with the cut on the end of the steel rail for the crossing so he uses a grinder to straighten and deburr it.
Here's Dick work with the grinder to get the end of the rail to his satisfaction. Up by our transfer track, Frank Smoley, Lew Fowler and Wayne Boron were working to remove the mud and stone from the previous rain that had gotten around the base of our guide rail for the transfer lift.
Ken uses the grinder to round the edges of the foot of the rail so the rail joiner clip can slip over it. The new crossing is tied in with the existing rail and the guys are adding ties to complete the installation before we ballast it.
After dumping ballast with a the wheelbarrow, since we were so close to the ballast pile, all that needs to be done is to level it and tamp it. Here we see Ken and Bob Gittinger tamping the ballast before the crossing is swept.
We had a good work crew for today's session with a lot of people making light the work task that had to be done. Frank finishes adding the few extra ties needed as Ken and Bob wrap up the tamping of the ballast.
The new crossing installation is almost complete as there is just a little more ballast required for the crossing as Joe Banzer surveys our work. Dave Foster said every artist signs his work so he stamped the year and his name on one of the frogs of the crossing which were machined out of 1"x 3" steel bar.
Finished crossing installation only awaits short straight section to connect to the switch that's lying adjacent to the rail where it will be installed next time, weather permitting. Meanwhile, Frank was dumping some of the stone and ballast that they had picked up and was dumping for future track right-a-way from the switch by Horrendous.
