Work Session - 6/06/2012

Today we decided to put in a switch at Two George Bridge on the Branch Line by Filmor as Rick Nagy and Dick Clark lay a switch on the existing rail to check for position. If one switch is good, maybe two is even better as Dick and Rick look at the layout with two switches coming off the bridge with John Koontz standing behind them.
Up at the Stanek Car Barn on the car and engine lift, Joe Banzer, Wayne Boron and Judson Elliott are going to check out the air brake system on the GP38 for leaks. Judson connects the air hose to the air valve on the engine chassis as Joe waits to open the valve to pressurize the storage tank.
Dave Hird, a new member, volunteered to be on the switch maintenance committee and discusses with Dick Clark what to look for in maintaining switches as Judson looks on. All our switches have a metal plate with numbers on it to identify the individual switches so a written report can be kept and updated on each switch as it is maintained.
Ted Nyland kneeling in front of the control panel box for our pneumatic switch that we were having problems with and Ted put in a new double action air cylinder. As Ted was routing the pneumatic line he was assisted by Paul Zorko in accomplishing the task.
Ted routing the air line to the cylinder. A view of the air cylinder with its mounting place with the air line connected to it going up to the control panel box.
Ken Vendlinger, one of our loyal groundskeepers, showed up and was using the weed whip to cut the grass around the steaming bay support posts. It looks like Ted and Paul have things pretty well wrapped up and the air line has to be tucked into place and buried and another task will be completed.
Dave Foster and Wayne have the air cylinder storage tanks out of the control car and are checking fittings for leakage. Consensus seems to be that the brake control valve for the air supply to the breaks is leaking.
By checking the valve they have proven that it is leaking around the stem so that's where we are losing our pressure in the air storage tanks. So we can use the car just by filling up the air tank manually, they are putting the control panel back together again as John behind them watches.
