Work Session - 6/11/14

It seems like we are going to have snakes in our Willis Car Barn again this year. This guy was sunning himself on the ledge of the window sill. Oh well, maybe we won't have any mice nesting in our equipment this year.
Scott Hewis had the cover off his engine and was charging the system so I took the opportunity to take a picture of the inner workings. Scott has his battery charger mounted right onto the unit which is a 36 volt charger for the 6-6 volt batteries he carries.
In this view you can see he has a heavy Plexiglas plate mounted over the terminals so they don't short out with the body shell or wayward hands with a wrench in them. Paul Emch and Dick Clark in conversation by the Stanek Car Barn Lift.
Today I brought cobalt drills so I'm going to see which is harder, the post or the the drill as this week I continue replacing the reflectors on our block posts. Success! The drill met the metal and the drill won, in fact they drill very easy with the cobalt drill.
Steve Zaken taking a break from cleaning out the leaves from the culverts under the tracks across from the Willis Car Barn. This is the block signal post at Horrendous and here I'm scraping off the double-sided foam tape from the old reflector.
Down at the Justin Tyme Bridge I see that Jerry Bell has installed the switch that was sitting down there and it's connected into the mainline. At the far end it looks like the rails just fade out but that's steel rail at the opposite end. At this point, on our mainline, we only have about 2% of the rail that's still aluminum.
This is the end of the switch which is so close to the bridge that the bridge guard rails are past the end of the points and the guardrails should be bent inward. Dave Cryor, Frank Smoley and Steve Zaken as they walk along cleaning the leaves from the trenches between Horrendous and Filmor.
The crew is getting ready to remove the leaves from under the Plate Girder Bridge that's on the Branch Line by the crossing at Filmor. Dave Hird, who is on the switch maintenance committee, is cleaning and lubricating the switch that's on the mainline that leads to the right for the South Yard Lead above Gulch.
