6.14.06 Work Session

Here at Penitentiary Glenn we are fortunate in that we are able to use inmates to help us with the labor in maintaining the railroad. This one, number 8139 is a very good worker though.
Sometimes he leans on the broom too much and we have been admonished for letting him cut the steel rails (it's too similar to cutting bars). #8139 likes to work outside, especially on Wednesdays.
If you didn't know any better you would say he's independent. This photo shows none other than George Woodling, a club member, putting on a Halloween costume for this spoof of photos.
Rick Nagy surveys the work we are doing in trying to make a run through from Branch Line. Dick Clark checking the end of the rail as Frank Foti and Rick watch.
A view looking toward the main line from where Rick was standing. This was an interesting photo as I was concerned about the composition of the picture and wasn't paying attention to where I was walking.
When I looked down this guy, about three feet long, was about six inches from my foot just watching me, but not to worry, I moved. From the snake looking towards the switch at the end of the yard.
Dick checking the radius of the bent rail into the wye switch. Looking from the end of the yard spur towards the wye and that 22 foot radius curve which means it will be for small trains only.
West end of yard with track at right that merges into the main line. This view shows the cut that was needed for fill to raise the track over a root of the large tree in the background.
We laid the bent rails down on three ties and after positioning the rail clamped them to the ties then moved them to the table where we added the remainder of the ties. Frank, George and Lou load the gravel train.
George watches as Dick fits up the curved rail to the wye switch as Rick works on joining the rails and Joe Banzer observes. Dick cutting the aluminum rail with a battery powered saw as George holds the rail.
George and Joe are adding the ties under the rail splice. The rail is looking pretty good and we still need to ballast, level the track and tamp the ballast.
Rick, George, George, Dick, Clayton and Lou as we finish the fit up of the rail to the yard spur. Here again we are adding the ties under the rail splice to complete the support for the rail.
A view looking west along the main line at the Branch crossing. This view is along Branch line looking at the same crossing towards that tight 22 foot radius that connects into the yard track.
The Branch line (foreground) crosses over the mainline and the gravel in the background is where it ties into the yard. Lou works on connecting the rail splices required.
The track crew pose for a picture of crimping the last rail clip to finish this section. Frank Foti on the work train to test the newly laid track and see if the track has an acceptable radius.
Frank with a trainload of ballast in buckets about to enter the sharp radius. Well, the gon didn't like the track as it is as the truck came off the track. Will have to ballast more and improve the grade going into the curve.
Don Spiedel was working on his switcher drilling and tapping holes trying to get it ready for the Open Meet which is this coming weekend.
After our work break we went back and re-ballasted the newly laid track. Look at the height of the ballast under the engine on that 22 foot radius curve that was required before we could run a train through without derailing.
