Work Session - 6/22/2011

Edith Hacker removing the grates to clean the ash pit. Today we were ballasting the track on the new spur to Hilton.
Rick Nagy and Frank Foti tamping the ballast between the ties as Dick Clark spreads more ballast. A view of the finished product all ballasted and tamped just needing a bumper to complete the spur and be ready for traffic.
Joe Banzer bolting on frames that Bill Deptowicz made to hold the brass screen in place for the ventilation openings we cut into the hood of the Park engine cab. Bill drilling the holes for the frame on the left side of the cab.
With the holes close to the cutout Bill had to angle the drill to keep the hole from running out into the opening. Ken Brooks using shears to cut away the steps for clearance for the new frames added to the hood.
A view of one of the two finished ventilation openings with the frame and the brass screen in place. We had opened up the small opening on the top of the body, machined out the cover, added the brass screening and screwed it back on for more ventilation.
A three-quarter view of the front of the engine showing the newly enlarged ventilation opening on the top and one of the two new side vents. Ken couldn't reach the steps totally with the tin snips, so he used a grinder to shorten the width to clear the ventilation frame.
Took a break to check up on the track crew and found Edith Hacker removing leaves from the flower beds between the tracks by the Willis Car Barn. Ken, Frank, Dick and Rick were replacing the outside rail on the curve for the Branch Line from aluminum to steel because of the wear just past Filmor.
The outside aluminum rail has been removed and the new steel rail that has been pre-bent is waiting for installation. Dick, Ken and Rick are taking a break from fastening down the new rail.
Joe, with the club's GP38 engine up on the Stanek Car Barn lift, is drilling the stairs for a bracket that Bill made for the new foot pegs. The holes have to be finish-drilled on this side of the steps of the engine for the new foot peg.
Jerry Bell thanking Rex Shriver for ripping the stump out of the ground with sheer brute force! A view of the hole showing that there wasn't a tap root, which we expected was creating so much trouble in getting the stump out.
