Work Session - 6/24/09

Wally Pausch tamping the ballast on the newly placed track which will be the South Yard Lead. John Koontz tamping the ballast where we reworked the grade on the curve coming off the Branch Line.
Since the level is between them, I guess that I can say neither one of these guys are on the level. Frank Foti and Dave Foster trouble shooting a problem with cars going through the frogs.
Marcel didn't notice that the switch was wrong and took the Hudson on the newly ballasted Branch Line heading west and settled the rail. The crew built another collector box in the yard for the drainage pipe.
Frank grinding the top of the rails to meet the height of the steel bar that the frogs were machined out of. A photo of the finished product after grinding in which the rail was a little higher than the steel bar.
Wally , John and Frank are checking the crossings where the tree fell on them and found that one has a bent plate. Wally works at removing ballast and will shift the rail joiners to remove the crossing plate.
The removed crossing that we made with 1/4" plate with the steel rail welded down to it has a definite dished shape to it. Frank took the plate to Hose Master to put it in a hydraulic press and straighten it out.
Wally and Rick Nagy are re-installing the repaired crossing by sliding the rail joiners back into position. Frank and Wally screwing the rail back on the ties.
Mike Harkleroad and Bill Deptowicz with tamping rods watch George Woodling sweep the ballast off the ties as Wally and Lew Fowler watch. At the station Kitty Shriver is cutting the grass and stops to talk to Edith Hacker.
Ron Trenhaile, Dick Clark, Rick Nagy and Edith who apparently we didn't work hard enough today as she still has some energy left. Pam Znidar walking the mower for it's exercise as she mows the grass at the unloading parking area.
The following photos provided by Pam. Kitty running the work train hauling dirt from the foundation excavations for the covered bridge we are building. Undermining the track for the three foundations we need.
Jerry Bell in the "trenches" as the digging continues. Karl Losely moves a bucket of dirt as Kitty returns with the work train for another load of dirt.
Kitty watches as Karl keeps digging and filling more buckets. The group managed to dig out under the track for the two end foundations before darkness settled in.
