6.28.06 Work Session

Mark Ross worked on the turntable bearings today which entailed removing them after blocking up the turntable and removing the wheel assembly. One end shown with the wheel assemblies.
The track alongside of the tree behind the station had a hump to it and we thought it might be the tree roots. While waiting for the work train Rick Nagy tamps the ballast on the adjacent track.
We removed a track section and dug down through the ballast but no roots. Frank Foti levels out the recessed area for replacing the track as Dick Clark watches.
The track panel has been put back down and is ready for ballast. Dick, Jon Jaros, and Frank watch Rick as he uses the broom to level the ballast on the track.
Jon tamping the ballast as Frank takes a breather. Frank continues the tamping as Jon watches and Rick brushes out the excess ballast between the track.
Next we moved the equipment to Drudgery to level out track in that section. No Dick's not sleeping on the job...it just looks that way. Rex Shriver is ringing the supper "bell" so it's time to eat.
The crew at the station after supper and it's starting to rain. Boy did it rain, you can't see the water running down the parking lot in the picture but the rain is really coming down hard.
The rain doesn't seem to want to let up and the area around the station is starting to flood. The main line right-of-way leaving the station to the West is under water.
Roger is heading out to to the switch shed and has to walk the top of the rails to stay out of the water. Quite a bit of rail is under water. This is an unusual amount of rain.
Rex Shriver surveys the water conditions at the sidings near the station. The rail just before the siding to our gravel pile is under water revealing areas that need drainage attention.
The water in the trench from Horrendous to the Summit Bridge on Branch line was just below the bridge beams. Horrendous didn't look too good with all the water that was running down towards Filmor.
High Creek was living up to its name with the Branch Line crossings being under water. This view taken along Branch Line looking towards the Yard from the right side of the previous picture.
A view looking south towards Zenith Culvert which must be partially plugged up with debris for all that water to run over the track. The view looking North over the flooded Zenith Culvert.
The discharge of runoff water from the Parks equipment service yard into the gorge just above Gulch. Frank by Zenith Culvert after the debris was cleaned out of the pipes.
Dick trying to remove the ballast from between a couple of ties to let the water drain away. Dick and Frank look at the water thats flowing under Bridge #6 down at the bottom of the hill at Fern.
You can see that the fallen tree trunk is effectively creating a dam for the water and Dick is removing some of the leaves so the water will go around. The overflow for the pond at Big Bend Bridge is really working.
