7.06.05 Work Session

A run for the kids before our work session started as we generally take out and replace track which doesn't allow running trains.
The train loads with passengers under Dick Clarks' watchful eye.
Everyone got to have a ride that wanted one as the last train loads.

George Woodling flattens out the existing aluminum rail clips for the new steel rail to be installed. Tom Reder joins George in the rail clip task.

George and Dave Foster screw down the steel rail as young Clayton Davidson, Dick Clark and George Davidson watch. It looks like George is pondering whether Dave is doing it right or how many screws need to still be driven in.
More rail has to be bent to the radius of the curve and cut to fit between the two rails. With that piece of rail installed its time for a break because it is getting hot out.
Hearing a dozer working by Big Bend Bridge I went over to investigate. It seems the Park is excavating a new pond for frogs and salamanders.

A view of the digging from the West end of Big Bend Bridge. Another view from the East end of our bridge.

After the break we moved to the West end of Big Bend Bridge to replace the aluminum rail as George is doing. Dave is getting help with the placement of rail gages from Clayton.
George and Dave continue to fasten down the outside rail. Next the inside rail is removed for replacement with steel rail.
With rail removed we will start laying the steel rail down. Frank Foti filing the end of a rail to get a better joint.

The workers on the pond have a good start on roughing out the shape of the pond. You are looking from the far side of the pond towards the access path and Big Bend Bridge.

Dave setting the rail gages as George watches. Frank filing the end of a rail for the rail joiner to slide on easier.

The steel rail replacement has progressed onto the bridge and the work train is close behind. Frank is screwing the rail down to the ties on Big Bend Bridge.

Clayton helps with the rail clips as the two Georges work at flattening the clips out for the steel rail. Another productive day on the railroad.
