Tremendous trains program - 7/14/10


Roger Harnish at right with the green shirt gives a talk for the Tremendous Trains Program that he hosts every year. Roger shows the kids the different parts of the engine and descibes the workings of a steam engine and what each part does.
Roger describes some of the different types of railrod cars there are and with flash cards shows the different types of loads each car is suited for. The 10 o'clock class is all aboard and waiting for the train ride to start.
First group arriving back at the station. The program has grown from a single two session day to two days three sessions each day with a 10am, 1pm and 3pm class. Here Bosha from the Park punches their tickets before their ride.
Almost done with the ticket punching and the ride will begin. The second half of the first group coming into the station with Rick Nagy as engineer of the train.
In between the Tremendous Train Sessions I found this fungi growing at the base of a tree and enjoyed the subtle shades of brown with its variations.

Roger answerers questions from the young engineers wearing hats given to them by the Park for the kids in the program. The youngsters are shown the different types of railroad cars and describes their uses.
With their tickets punched the train slowly moves out from the loading area and another adventure begins. The second half of the 1pm group arrives back at the station and departs the train.
The 3pm presentation starts and Roger shows the young engineers some small tabletop steam engines and shows them how they work. The talks that Roger gives are tailored to the age group of the youngsters and here he listens to a question.
The kids seem to like the various types of cars on display and Rogers description of them. With this last group being smaller everyone was able to fit on the train for a ride and Roger gives them the riding instructions.
Back at the station Bosha and Pat greet the train at the end of the ride and that's Lew Fowler who was conductor for all of todays' rides. Rick coupled up to the cars that were on display and is now running through the yard.
