7.22.09 Work Session

Steve Zaken and George Woodling load the ballast train for the new track in front of our Stanek Car Barn. A view looking west from the end of the barn with three tracks down out of five.
Steve and Edith Hacker watch Dick Clark as he ponders the track and switch layout on the second track coming down the grade. The crew is loading the buckets with dirt excavated from between the bridge foundations.
A view of the two ten foot spans of girders supported on the three foundations. The dirt was moved to the end of the yard where our new storage stub sidings will be located.
Judson Elliott dumps his bucket of dirt as the others continue with the bucket brigade. The crew moved a lot of dirt from the site of the new covered bridge, bucket by bucket.
Edith wasted no time in raking the dirt out while it was still soft. Jerry Bell at the pile of lumber and the frame trusses we made for the sides of the covered bridge.
Robbi Haines carries a roof truss down to the site of the new bridge. Ken Brooks and Mike Harkleroad had carried down the first truss and have set it on the foundations.
Kitty Shriver steadies a truss frame at the oposite end of the span with Dick Mackey in the background. Dick, Robbi, Pam Znidar and Jerry take a breather as Dick and Edith watch the goings on.
The first frame set in place. Lew Fowler, Mike and Ken jostle the second frame in place opposite the one already set.
Kitty and Ken steady one side, Robbi the other with Mike Uhrich holding the far end as Mike holds a roof truss as Jerry screws it down with Lew steadying the ladder. Mike holds the truss steady as Jerry fastens it down.
It is beginning to look like a covered bridge as more of the roof trusses are added. Kitty is holding the third side truss which will have to be cut at the joining plate.
Ken is marking the cut with a framing square as the others watch. Mike, Bill Deptowicz and Mike watch as Ken joins the top of the trusses together. Alot of things were going on today with the train program, track work and raising the framework for the bridge.
