7.25.07 Work Session

The new trusses were to be delivered by 9:30 am and when I got there at 9:15 am they were there. An end view looking toward our Switch Shed with the side beams in place to support the trusses.
After setting some support verticals we lifted the first truss into position. It's looking good and George Woodling is under the truss with John Koontz to the right.
George Metts is on the ladder and we have set five trusses in place. The trusses being made of two by fours were light enough that one person could move them but we had three people lifting them into place.
While we were working on the trusses Mark Ross was grinding a bevel on the car stops for the transfer table. George Davidson checking the center to center dimension between trusses.
George is adding a brace for stability to keep the trusses from rolling over. George is holding on to the brace while Dave Foster checks dimensions.
We are almost halfway through setting the trusses as Ted Nyland (left) listens to Dave and Lew Fowler as John on ladder checks measurments and George marks the overhang on the truss. Looking Good!
Ted on the side with George Metts and Don Speidel in background cutting a beveled 2x6 for an eave board. Time to set another truss so ladders are moved and a truss will be carried into position.
All the trusses have a marking on one end and should be erected so that they are all on one side for symmetry in case the building jig is off. Another truss is ready to be lifted in place.
The track crew were ballasting track and Joe Banzer and Rick Nagy load a ballast train. A view from the transfer table area of the trusses.
George is watching the guys mark the trusses for the overhang. We have almost two thirds of the trusses up and nailed in position.
Dave is nailing as John holds the truss at the center and Lew steadies the end. The guys are putting the end support across the door opening in place to tie the walls together.
Edith Hacker and Marie Nyland are working on the embankment in front of the Switch Shed. The rain finally came and chased us to seek cover and the flash showed it off to good advantage.
The view from the backside of the existing storage barn as it continues to rain. The rain stopped and Roger Harnish and Dave are setting bracing across the bottom chord of the trusses as Lew climbs the ladder.
All the trusses are in place and the installing of the braces continues. Lew standing on the bottom chord of the trusses to hold the horizontal braces that are chest high to him.
Roger and Lew continue with the braces in the trusses. We checked to see if the building was still square and plumb and added diagonals to hold it plumb before the rest of the bracing was added.
At the end of the building we nailed the diagonal to the vertical uprights for the door opening. The next day we finished cutting the beveled eave boards.
George is nailing the eave boards in place. Don Speidel is nailing the hurricane clips required by our building code which anchors the bottom chord of the truss to the support beam.
George and Dave worked on the rest of the bracing. Don continued on the brackets as they had to be nailed securely in place with special nails.
George and I worked on the eave boards and finished one side. Here George is checking the position of the board in place before we finish nailing it up.
