Work session - 7/28/10

Some of the members thought that we should lower the track in front of the station so the top of rail would be at the same height as the newly installed pavers. This meant the first track would have to be lowered 2 1/2 inches so we started removing the ballast between the tracks.
With the rail joiners removed at the end of every second panel (making a 20 section) we used a pick and pried the track out of the existing ballast. Dick Clark here removing two more rail joiners to create another 20 foot panel to lift out.
One 20 foot section removed and we found the ties after 27 years to be in bad shape. Lew Fowler filling the buckets to be hauled by train to a dumpng site on the Branch Line where we are going to work on next year.
Paul Zorko and Edith Hacker work on lifting the sections of track out of the ballast. Once the track panel has been removed Edith, Paul and Lew shovel up the existing ballast and load it into buckets.
Rick brought the work train with buckets of ties to replace the exiting decayed ones, which meant all will be replaced as they were concave on the underside of the ties. Edith just kept on digging, I don't know where she gets her stamina from.
It turned out to be alot of existing ballast and soil that got removed so we could lower the track by 2 1/2 inches. Rick took the photo of Bill Deptowicz the photographer taking a breather, just not as young as I used to be.
When your body is burning up due to the heat of exhaustion the cool grass and mother earth felt good. Rick got to the point that he tried it also just to cool down and relax to rejuvenate the batteries.
When everyone stopped for the next break session I took a picture of the progress so far, 100 feet of track had been removed. Dick was replacing the ties by just putting a new one between the old ones and this kept the gage but he still checked with the track gauges.
Karl Losely and Dick Mackey dug up the conduit that got cracked and needed a section replaced. Looking from the other end of the station where the track was removed.
Karl, Jerry Bell, Lew, Dick, Rick and Bob and Rachael Beardslee having dinner that Robbi fixed for us. Rachael, Edith and Sue Bell caught in the cameras lens. It was a good days work and a lot of train trips today.
