Work Session - 8/01/2012

Today Frank Smoley, John Koontz, Dick Clark and Frank Foti are digging out the soil so we can lay some more track panels between Fillmore and High Creek on the Branch Line. When I told a joke and told Frank to turn the other cheek, this is not quite what I meant.
Ted Nyland watches as Dick aligns the track panel that he and John put in place as Frank gets the rail clips. With the track panel in place, John continues with placing the ties in preparation for screwing the rail down to the next panel we will create.
In our digging, we uncovered the cable that runs to the yard lead on the mainline above Gulch to the signal block switches from the relay panel. Frank continues screwing the rails down to the ties using the rail gauges for proper spacing of the rails as Ted and Dick watch.
Frank applying finesse to move the rail gauge using old yeller and a hammer(old yeller being a big old screwdriver that we pound on with a hammer, pry with and abuse it in which the tip looks like it). Dick gets down to measure the spacing between the track so we maintain a proper clear distance that we use for parallel track which is usually 42 inches.
With John using the tie lifter to hold them against the bottom of the rail, Frank continues using the drill to drive the screws into place to hold the rails in position. Dick removes a piece of rail from the rail bender for the start of the fourth 10 foot track panel.
After we bent of pair of rails to the curvature we needed, they were put in place and Frank continued with fastening them down. In this view you can see we have about 15 feet more of track to put down to connect to the switch at the opposite end of the bypass.
A view looking down the completed track for the bypass track installed so far that is adjacent to the branchline track. In this view looking from the opposite end we see the track that will have to be ballasted and leveled, but that's all for today.
