Work Session - 8/01/2012

The Park engine developed a leak at some of the new fittings so Frank Smoley and Wayne Boron were checking things out. It appears they were checking the fittings and hoses near the hydraulic oil filter mount.
They disconnected the hose from the filter to check out if enough pipe dope had been used when the connection was made. Over at the bypass track on the Branch Line John Koontz was working, fastening down the rail to the ties with screws.
Dick Clark using old yeller to clear out the ballast from between the existing ties on the Branch Line where the new ties will the spaced in between the existing. Lew Fowler mans the shovel as John digs out more of the ballast from in between the existing ties.
Dick giving our work the once over to check and see if the ties can be placed in position for the new rail. With the ties put into position the 10 foot sections of rail were started from the switch and Dick checks out the alignment between the aluminum and steel rail.
Dick and John install the rail joiner clips between the track and the end of the rail at the switch. With the rail joined to the switch you can see we still have about a 5 foot gap between the two track panels to fill in.
Ted Nyland was working on moving the remote switch stand, which is in front of him, in between the two tracks so approaching from either the left or right track it can be operated. Ted explains to Dick that he plans to drill through the web of the rail for the rod to pass through above the ties.
Because the new section of track on the Branch Line is draped over the ground we can't use the heavy ballast car so Jerry Bell and Dick load the buckets by hand as Lew watches. Dick at the controls of the work engine as he takes the ballast train on its loop around the track to get to the Branch Line.
Dick clears the spilled ballast from a dropped bucket as Bob Pakeltis watches, ready with the broom to sweep it down to the top of the ties. One trainload with the buckets hardly made a dent in the ballast that is needed.
Back at the gravel pile Jerry and Bob load buckets as Dick and Lou wait for the train to be loaded. Lew takes over so Jerry can take a breather and soon another trainload of ballast will be heading out to the Branch Line track.
