8.09.06 Work Session

We started this work session by staking out the radius for a curve from the end of our yard to the siding tracks at Hemlock The next photo shows the curvature we settled on.
Joe Banzer and Dick Clark are in discussion for the placement of the switch that will create a run around track from the two siding tracks. Frank Foti joins in the discussion.
On one of our trips back to the station for a break I found Mark Ross checking out a malfunction of a switch motor which he replaced. This view of the end of the sidings shows where we removed track.
The track crew convined on a dirt pile of blue clay that we had dumped down near Gruffer. The wet clay was lumpy, heavy and awkward to shovel into our 5 gallon buckets for the train ride up to Hemlock.
We had to extend the culvert for the adjacent curved track that will parallel the main line. George Woodling tamping the clay with a post to mash it down somewhat flat as Frank waits for his turn at it.
Frank and George installing pieces of stone over the joints before we bury the pipe in gravel. We heeded the call to supper at the stationand this view shows the group pretty well finished and some heading back to Hemlock.
This shows the tamped blue clay we're going to use as a base/fill. The guys are checking whether a wye or a left hand switch will better suit the position for joining the track together.
The guys are changing the switches around to see for best fit. The track is completed between the switch and one of the sidings by adding the ties and rail to fill in between the gap.
With a few more rails crimped to the ties the task will be completed for todays work session.
