8.19.09 Work Session

John Koontz, Dave Foster and Frank Foti confer on the best way to add bracing to stiffen the covered bridge structure. Bill Deptowicz brought a pattern to cut out the cupola beams and Ken Brooks is fastening them to the vertical supports.
John isn't laying down on the job but drilling holes for bolts as Dave assists. Ken is cutting a roof panel as George Woodling holds the extenion cord from coming apart and that's a pile of supports behind George.
Dave cutting off the ends of the carriage bolts that project beyond the nuts on the inside of the header beams. The nine cupola roof frames in place through the opening we left in the roof.
A close up shot showing the line we strung between the end supports to keep them all in alignment. Ken screwing the decking down as Bill holds the panel in place, George provides the screws and Steve Zaken holds the ladder.
Ken straddles the cupola roof waiting for the next cut piece of metal drip edging. George moves a piece of edging to the table for measuring and cutting.
Ken applies the building paper to the cupola roof and shingles will go up next. The guys decided on diagonal bracing like this to stiffen the covered bridge from side sway.
Second shift of workers show up in late afternoon as Roger Harnish holds the shingles as Dave cuts and Tom Pappas takes the cutoffs while Ken watches. Karl Losely works on the peak finishing the main roof as Tom hands him the cut shingles.
Bill Besselman on a ladder taking pictures of the progress. Karl hammering down a stubborn nail in the starter strip for the shingles.
Roger working on the shingles at the opposite end of the cupola. Robbi Haines getting the shingles to the guys on the roof.
The roofing is looking good as Karl and Roger take a breather and relax for a few minutes. With the guys looking tired and hot there are only a few more shingles to put in place.
