8.22.07 Work Session

When I arrived at the track today for the work session I found Edith Hacker already painting the Switch Shed. George Metts and George Davidson were putting on the corner trim to the new storage building.
Some of the track crew had already got a start on reballasting and leveling the track at Filmor. The track was sloping away from the tree so we worked on it to level it out.
No, Dick Clark didn't fall down, he lays down to sight down the track to see how level (or not) it is. We finished that section and moved over to Bruce where I found this specimen growing alongside of the track.
George Woodling and Frank Foti are playing baseball..look at the white object at the center of the picture. The track is heaved up near the base of this tree so we removed a track panel to see the cause.
Dick is looking over the situation as George gets the hoe. George is leveling out the old ballast as Frank stands by with the axe to chop a root we encountered.
With the track panel back in place George is refastening the rail joiners as Dick points out something to Frank. As George finishes up the other end of the panel Frank starts dumping ballast.
We are done with this mini project and Dick is telling George "A funny thing happened to me on the way over to the track today...right over there." With this done we headed back to the station for a break.
On the steaming bays Don Spiedel and Marty Pinkston are working on the club's work engine. They are checking the alignment of engine and drive because the new spicer in the coupling is wearing already.
This is a close-up of the drive that goes into a chain driven reduction drive down to the axles. After our break we tackled the park drive access road crossing and George Davidson went to trim the boards down for us.
We found this over our heads near where we were working about 12 feet off the ground. While waiting for George to finish cutting the boards we dressed off the track with ballast and Rick Nagy was sweeping off the track.
Rick is removing some of the ballast by hand away from the rail. Ron Trenhaile is sweeping out the mud from between the rails and ties because it was thoroughly wet when we removed the boards.
