8.23.06 Work Session

The track beside the tree has been pushed up by the tree roots so we decided to move the switch. We placed a new switch back further for positioning to lessen the traffic around the tree.
This scheme will necessitate the removal of the switch in the foreground. You can see how the track rolls off around the tree and the steamers don't like the "rock and roll".
George Woodling and Frank Foti are taking the rail joints apart to remove the switch. Bill Deptowicz and Lou Fowler remove the bolts on the rail joints as Rick Nagy watches.
With the two switches removed this is what it looks like. Lou is moving the ballast out of the way after we removed two sections of track for the installation of a switch.
Since we had to butt the rails of the switch to the existing ends of the rail, that determined where the switch would be placed on this side. Next the rails for the new curve had to be fitted.
Lou and Frank put the rail joiners back on to join the switch to the existing rail. George is looking over the curvature as laid out and wondering if it should be more gradual.
Frank and Lou are adding the ties under the rail joints and fastening them down. The sections of track that we removed are temporarily setting in place to check for length required.
Neal Smith and George are crimping the rail to the tie clips on our new curve. Dick is sighting across the rails to find the best position for the new switch which will be cut into the existing rails.
Break time for the guys so I took this picture of the completed curve when they left. Bill Bodemer, with the shovel, joined us after the break and the guys are removing the existing ballast.
Neal and Lou are digging in earnest to clear away the old ballast. The new switch is in position and Dick is getting ready to cut a rail so that the ends will align properly.
Lou and Neal are adding ties under the rail joints to complete the installation of the crossover track. This sweeping curve should not pose a problem for the steamers any more.
Dick is scraping the ballast off the tree root to see our problem with the track heaving. We positioned that long track panel we had and Roger Harnish is applying finesse to tighten up the rail joints.
Neal is standing on the rail as George tightens up the rail joiners. We have a short section to add at the other end and then will be able to ballast the track we put down.
These two photos show how it turned out when I got back to the track the following week with the nice flowing curve and the crossover between the tracks before the tree. That's Rick Nagy by the train shed.
