Work Session - 8/28/13

We loaded up a car with our used rail that will be used to replace the outside rail on the curves for our yard lead in and the Branch Line because of the wear on the head of the aluminum rail in those areas. Rick coming down the yard lead and you can see the rail that is been put off to the side.
The crew was checking the wear on the railhead on the approach to the Big Bend Bridge. Back at the station, Dave Foster had taken on the project of adding the second handrail to the other side of our wide steps and the crew were digging holes for the posts.
Dave Foster and Lew Fowler at the top of the steps, as Frank Smoley shovels back the dirt around the post as Ken Brooks watches in this view. Dave smoothing up the edges so no one will get a splinter from the posts and the handrail.
In this view, Ken nails the side board to the end of the tie steps to hold the gravel in the steps and the grade from mixing. Project is almost completed and is looking good, just needs to be backfilled around the side board.
Lew, Ken, and Frank spread the backfill that Dave dumped from the wheelbarrow as the work progresses nicely. Lew shoveling the dirt out of the wheelbarrow that Dave is holding as Ken with Frank, spread and tamp the soil around the post and sideboard.
A view showing the post and the sideboard backfilled and tamped in place. The crew continues to place the backfill at the top end of the steps as Ken cleans up the dirt that fell on the stone in between the ties.
Another task completed and it looks good and it's a good safety measure too for the members and public that will use it! A view from straight on at the handrails on this wide set of steps. Nicely done guys...
The track crew was out on the Branch Line offloading the steel rail, in this case by Bridge #14 above High Creek with Chris Cooper, John Koontz, Dick Clark and Rick Nagy. Chris reaches for another piece of steel rail with John and Dick the background coming to grab another piece off the train.
The crew setting off rail between High Creek and Filmor on the Branch Line. Back in the Stanek Storage Barn, Paul Zorko and Paul Emch were working on brakes on one of the riding cars checking the trucks over, greasing and making adjustments.
