8.31.05 Work Session

Stopped in at the track on Sunday the 21st to see the progress on the new bridge. Our last bridge was Georges' plate girder one. This is the new one alongside the Truss Bridge.
View from the East end approach of the Truss Bridge. Those steel beams you see were donated by Dick Schmidt. We started the day with the intent to use two bar joists for the deck beams.
Two views of the West end approach. The work crew had already set the bridge abutment beams for the span of the bar joists when Dick Schmidt arrived with the steel wide flange beams.
Necessary revision took place and the abutments were moved. Dick Clark and Edith Hacker wire wheeled and painted the beams before they were placed into position.
2 x 8's were bolted through the top flange of the steel beams and the 2 x 6 decking was screwed into the 2 x 8's and a wood header plate added at the ends to contain the fill and ballast.
The work crew is to be commended for a job well done. Looking West from the switch on the Branch Line that will route you over to the mainline after you cross over the new bridge.
We had a small work party this week as some of our work crew went on a Ramble. We had a root problem lifting the track. Dave Foster, George Woodling, George Metts and I dug out and chopped up the root.
George Metts is lifting the track so Dave can pull out the root. Looking West from where we are towards the new "Justin Tyme Bridge" that has the first set of tracks laid down on it.
We decided to move more dirt fill along the right-a-way of tracks for the approach to Justin Tyme Bridge. Two trainloads of dirt turned out to be a very muddy proposition.
