Work Session - 8/31/2011

Today George Metts brought his excavator and we see Frank Foti and John Koontz helping to offload it. George is driving the excavator over to our work area by the concrete pad with the scissor lift for the steaming bays.
A view looking over his shoulder as he excavates a trench for the tie wall that the guys are going to build today. Bill Deptowicz set a section of the signal light mast post at the end of one of the steaming bays where he is going to dig a hole for the signal foundation which is his project.
Up on the steaming bays Wayne Boron, George and Steve Zaken are trying to figure out why Steve has a leak in the brake line on one of his riding cars. A view looking towards the gravel pile from the concrete pad showing the progress that George is making on the trench.
John watching George as he digs progressively deeper. Dave Foster measuring off the trench so we can end it at a length equal to the length of the ties.
George looks on and waits to finish digging after the measuring. Even though we have mechanized equipment, some hand work is involved as John and Wayne clean out the trench.
While all this is going on, Frank was fastening down rail to ties in our yard behind the Willis Car Barn. Another view of the progress being made for this siding that Frank is so diligently working on by himself today.
George is lengthening the trench as Wayne directs him for depth as the rest of the crew watch. The guys are straightening out walls of the trench to keep it from caving in as George finishes up with the digging.
Meanwhile, here is the hole Bill has excavated for the foundation for the signal light using a pick and shovel, that ground is hard. Bill digging and removing more dirt to buckets near by as the hole needs to be a lot deeper.
And back at the station, Edith Hacker was cutting up branches for the fire ring after trimming some bushes and trees around the Orchard Yard Loop. Back at the trench, several of the ties have been placed in position and leveled.
Wayne is throwing gravel to the base of a tie as Dave lifts the tie to level it. The guys are taking a well-deserved breather from lifting the ties.
Bill's got a pretty good, deep hole -- but he's running out of steam, using a pry bar to make progress amongst the stones that he is encountering. Jerry Bell got off work and came out to the track and started helping Bill with the digging for the signal foundation which was much appreciated.
