Work Session

Last year the Park service dropped several trees behind our new storage building and today Dave Foster brought his chain saw to cut the trunks up so we could have a clear path for our future track to the building.
Rick Nagy, Jonathan Swartz and Dick Clark were helping to move the cut pieces out of the way. We have alot of wood to move out of the way so we can grade the area for the new yard and approach track.
Dave checks over his saw in between cuts. We will have a lot of cleaning up to do before we can grade the area.
This is the path of the new trackage for the yard rails in front of our new shed. We had been talking about the stump removal and Jim Tuckey of the Park Service showed up with the stump grinder...talk about timing!
The guys have done a great job of clearing a path for the new track. The stumps were too big for us to just let Edith Hacker dig them out.....but in hindsight, I do believe that Edith could have done it.
With the stump grinding blade in view at left and the stump(about 4 1/2 feet in dia.)chips are about to fly. The stump grinder blade swings from side to side as Jim lowered the blade to cut the stump down.
Jim stood behind a shield operating the controls for the proper "cut" to grind the stump. This machine sure makes the heavy sawdust chips.
Jim moved the position of the machine to cut the stump from a different angle. Once again the chips were flying making piles of ground up stump. What a labor saver.
While Jim waited we cleared out the chips from the top of the stump so he could better see the task at hand. The telephoto lens allowed me to get in close to the action but stay at a safe distance.
Dave and Dick watch from behind as Jim continues with the stump grinding. A second stump is being ground up in this view.
Bill Deptowicz mounted a light on the outside of the shed that will illuminate the new tracks eventually. Jim working on the third stump and grinding it down below grade.
The blade for the stump grinder looks to be about 2" thick and about 30" in diameter solid steel with carbide teeth on each side that do the work. Dick and Rick dumping fill for the new yard track location.
Ken Brooks and Rick work at building up the grade for the track. The pile of blue clay we are trying to get rid of is slowly diminishing.
Roger Harnish and Jonathan are loading up the chips to clear the area. Frank Foti, Dick and Rick talk about the location of the drainage pipe that will eventually be under the new track.
Boss man, Rex Shriver, has shown up to give his approval of the work session. Jake Knox, George Woodling and Ron Trenhaile rake the chips so that they may be shoveled up easier.
Many hands make light of the work and we let Edith shovel just so she wouldn't feel left out. We got the wood cleared from our proposed right-a-way, the stumps ground up, more ground fill in place and the area cleaned up. A great work session.
