Work Session - 9/10/14

Dave Cryor took to the task of mowing the grass in front of the station. Dave Hird once again working on the maintenance of the switches, he has a long list as we have over 100 switches that have to be maintained.
We had a smaller turnout as some of the guys went on a ramble so we are checking out the trucks on our 8' long rider cars that the wheel flanges seem to be rubbing on the underside of the footplate. Wayne Boron, Paul Emch and Ken Brooks work to support the car to lay it over.
Paul was lifting the end of the car as Ken put 2 X 2's 3 feet long underneath the car and Wayne steadied the lift from rolling. Ken and Paul discussed the weight of the car as we have bricks in the opposite end of the riding car from the control point end to offset when only one person is riding.
This shows how we lay the car over supported on those wood supports that Ken slipped underneath the car when we check the trucks. A close-up of the underside of the footboard shows the shiny spot where the wheel flange has been rubbing.
As Paul holds the truck, Ken removes the airline for the brakes so the truck can be pulled free of the bolster pin. Looking at the truck at the opposite end of the car you can see above the wheels the shiny spots were it's rubbing underneath the floorplate also.
A close-up view of the problem and why we hear a grinding noise when the cars fully loaded with passengers. Here Ken starts removing the screws to take the seat off as Paul told him to remove a couple of the bricks.
Paul had some plastic shim's that were made from plastic milk bottle jugs like a washer and we put those over the bolster pin give a little more clearance. After greasing the shims we put everything back together.
A view looking from the end of the car, these are Tom be trucks with brakes so we'll see if the shims help. The bricks that were removed from the end of the car and there are still another three in the car.
